In my work with clients grappling with mental health challenges in addiction, trauma, relationships, and PTSD, my therapeutic approach is integrative and tailored to individual needs. Recognizing the complex interplay between these challenges, I draw upon evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Art Therapy. Through a compassionate and strengths-based lens, I collaboratively explore the roots of stressors, addressing underlying trauma and PTSD triggers. I emphasize skill-building to enhance coping mechanisms, emotional regulation, and resilience. Additionally, I integrate mindfulness practices to promote self-awareness and empower clients in their recovery journey. Treatment involves fostering a secure therapeutic alliance, providing psychoeducation, and utilizing trauma-informed interventions to support clients in breaking the cycle, while addressing the profound impact of life stressors, trauma, and addiction on their mental health.
What better way to make a breakthrough? Surf therapy combines the experience of surfing with mental health therapeutic approaches to promote psychological, physical, and social well-being. It is useful for treating various conditions, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The ocean provides an environment that is free of distractions, making it easier to focus on healing. According to studies, many people report feeling calmer after spending time in the water. There are many benefits to being on, near, or in the water. Trying a new skill changes the way we think and approach our current challenges. Applying concepts of surfing and exercise helps to gain skill and confidence toward healing process in therapy. No gear, no problem! Surfboard and wetsuit included with this session.
A common question that I often receive is, “Do I have to be good at art to do art therapy"?”. The answer is, not at all. In fact art making in the process of art therapy is supposed to be messy, as we are working through the messiness of life’s challenges.
Art therapy involves opening the mind and making connections by use of the creative process in drawing, painting, collage, coloring, or sculpting to help people express themselves through an outlet that is often less intimidating and limiting as the traditional “talk therapy”. Clients can interpret their own nonverbal messages, symbols, and metaphors often found in these art forms, which may lead to a better understanding of their feelings and behavior so they can move on to resolve deeper problems.
